PROTECT LAW ENFORCEMENT

Strengthen New York State’s current assault weapons ban to address "copy cat" guns by utilizing a single characteristic test to define an assault weapon, requires registration of assault weapons and ban large capacity magazines (more than 10 rounds) (A.2466 – Lavelle) (S.2445 - Schneiderman) (S.5504 - Padavan)

Amend the definition of "armor piercing ammunition" to include certain new construction materials, and would prohibit the possession of "armor piercing, frangible and devastator ammunition" (A. 2837 – Koon)

FIGHT GUN TRAFFICKING IN NEW YORK STATE

Require that expended projectiles, shell casings and guns seized be submitted by state and local law enforcement to State Police (A.2213 – Koon)

Establish stricter standards for gun dealers to include improved record keeping, liability insurance, inventory security and mandatory training of salespeople. Lower the threshold number of guns required for criminal possession and sale of firearms. (A.2345 - Paulin)

Require gun manufacturers to abide by a code of conduct with respect to their sales and distribution practices, and if they fail to follow the code, a cause of action would be created allowing a victim to file a lawsuit (A.574 – Stringer) (S.644 – Schneiderman)

Mandate that a background check be conducted by a federal firearms licensed dealer before a rifle or a shotgun is resold between private individuals (A.2344 – Paulin) (S.1642 – Schneiderman)

REDUCE UNINTENTIONAL GUN DEATHS & INJURIES

Enact a Safe Storage/Child Access Prevention law, holding gun owners responsible for safely storing their guns (A. 2083 – Paulin) (A. 673 – Weisenberg)

Mandate development of "childproof" handguns, which can only be fired by the gun owner (A.5831 – Sanders) (S.2122 – Kruger)

Develop a pilot firearm injury surveillance tracking system to identify communities that are at risk for homicides, suicides and unintentional shootings, while developing prevention strategies. (A. 1395 – McEneny) (S.708 Breslin)

PROVIDE FOR HOMELAND SECURITY

Ban the .50 caliber sniper rifle (A.4471 – Eddington) (S.2590 – Schneiderman)

KEEP GUNS AWAY FROM DOMESTIC ABUSERS

Revocation or ineligibility for firearms license or surrender for willful violation of temporary order of protection or order of protection involving physical injury (A.419 – Paulin) (S.2982 – Spano)

Requires the judge in a criminal proceeding or in a family court proceeding, upon issuance of an order of protection, to inquire as to the ownership of a firearm by the defendant or respondent (A.2404 – O’Donnell) (S.1929 – Balboni)
